Samsung Galaxy S23 seamless updates

Galaxy S23 gets seamless updates

The Samsung Galaxy S23 coming out in February 2023 may become Samsung's first device that can install updates seamlessly in the background. In fact, this will be a mandatory feature from Google for devices running Android 13 coming to market. Read more about what exactly that means for you here!

Yes, we know that seamless updates have been a thing in the Android world since 2016 (!) but not all phone manufacturers, including Samsung, adopted this feature in their own Android operating system. Most devices without this feature that crossed the counter were Samsung devices. However, that will change starting early next year, when Samsung can no longer avoid it and must also make seamless updates mandatory. The Galaxy S23 will in all likelihood become the first device that will (have to) implement this.

Obligation from Google

It seems that Google wants to make seamless updates mandatory. Devices appearing on the market with Android 13 should be able to guarantee this. Since the Galaxy S23 will likely be the first Galaxy device to appear with Android 13, it is very possible that it will also become the first Galaxy device that must indeed be able to install updates seamlessly in the background. Seamless install involves a feature that should allow an Android device to divide its storage into two partitions. This allows one device to do an update in the background (download and run) while the other partition stays busy with standard tasks. So one partition for downloading the update, the other partition lets you use the device for daily business. Why major phone manufacturers like Samsung have not implemented this option earlier is mainly because it is a complex operation. To let an update do its job live while keeping the system active and usable causes quite a few difficulties and pitfalls. However, over the past few years Google has managed to relieve some of this for manufacturers. Therefore, now should finally be the time to make this feature mandatory.

What will this mean in practice?

What exactly does this mean for you, as an owner of your beautiful new Galaxy device in 2023? That you can update your Samsung device without having to reboot, which sometimes takes a very long time! You can continue to use apps while updating, think WhatsApp or YouTube. Of course, the device needs quite a bit of processing power to install new software, so it may be that heavier games won't pull it off. But not being able to do anything with your device is a thing of the past! Of course, it is still a matter of first seeing and then believing; Google wanted to make seamless updating mandatory with Android 11, which did not succeed. So it is a bit of speculation, but we think it is really time to go for it! By the way, check out our offer for our inexpensive Samsung devices here
