Apple presents four iPhone 12 models
At a virtual event, Apple announced the new iPhone models with 5G. During the event, for the first time not three, but four new models were presented: the iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and last but not least the 12 Pro Max. Sales of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro already start at the end of this month, for the 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max you will have to wait until November.
Don't be alarmed when you buy the new iPhone 12 and open the box without earbuds and charger, Apple has done this on purpose. For several years now, part of Apple's press conferences have been devoted to the company's ecological initiatives, which this time included the announcement that earbuds and chargers will no longer be included with the new models. This is to combat electronic waste in the world, thus following Samsung's example. On the other hand, the Earpods with Lightning port have become cheaper. Apple will also use more recycled materials and renewable energy in the production chain for the iPhone 12.
What is striking about the appearance of the iPhone 12 is that old is new again. The angular design of the iPhone 4 and 5 is back and the bezels are also flat, which fits well with the design of the iPad Pro and iPad Air. The big newcomer is the iPhone 12 Mini, a device with a 5.4-inch screen. This makes the iPhone 12 Mini about the same size as the iPhone 5 and 5S, though of course the Mini is a bit thinner. The iPhone 12 is also a lot thinner, smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have a 6.1-inch screen, with the 12 Pro Max having a 6.7-inch screen, the largest ever on an iPhone. All four variants feature an OLED screen.
Furthermore, Apple is not going to switch to USB-C, instead sticking with the Lightning port. New sensors and magnets have been added to the wireless charging system, allowing wireless chargers to snap to the back. This also works well with different kinds of cases. The iPhone 12 features a new type of glass called ceramic shield and is otherwise made of aluminum and steel. The edge of the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini is aluminum, while the 12 Pro models have a shiny edge of stainless steel. Moreover, the models can withstand the pressure of six meters under water.
The primary cameras of the iPhone 12 models have a lens with an aperture of f/1.6. The rest of the cameras (including the front camera) all get night mode. The cameras have wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses, with the Pro models also having a camera with telephoto lens. In addition, the Pro Max has a camera with 65mm lens for a 2.5x zoom and the Pro models get the "ProRAW" feature to shoot in raw. The Pro models also have a so-called "time of flight sensor" for faster autofocus in low-light and augmented reality.
In terms of video recording, the iPhone 12 models can record up to 4K at 60FPS. There is also support for shooting 10bit HDR video and the models support 5G on frequencies used in the Netherlands and Belgium.
All models use the Apple A14 Bionic doc. This was already presented last month, at the same time as the announcement of the new iPad Air, which features the same soc. This new A14 chip is once again the fastest mobile chip ever, knocking its predecessor (the A13) off the throne, due to a speed increase of up to 50 percent.
On Oct. 23, the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will be released for €909 and €1159. The 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max will see the light on Nov. 13 for €809 and €1259. By the way, the iPhone 11 remains the only old model on sale, which you can pick up for €689.
